You know what it’s like when you sit down at the garden table and you feel squashed. There isn’t room to push your chair out, and others have to squeeze past you. Or maybe your chair teeters on the brink of the terrace and you feel you could tip at any point.
The space needs to be right for the size of table you want. Just as you’d do with your furniture inside, do the same outside. It’s the same principle.

When you get to this stage, there’s a possibility that you may get stuck. You’ll have chosen all the words for your garden style and atmosphere - the ‘feel’ of the space - and you’ll have decided pretty much where everything is going.
You’ll have worked out where to put things - zoning - and you’ll also be thinking about the route around the garden which joins all these areas up and creates an interesting journey.
But when it comes to how big different areas are, it can be tricky to know what space to allocate to what:
