Today, I’m setting the next task for the Small Garden Design course
Remember, this course works for any-sized garden, so whatever the size of your plot, come and join in the fun!
Remember there’s a Zoom this Sunday 8th at 6pm UK time!
You can start this course at any time and work on it in your own time, and you can find a round-up of everything we’ve looked at so far here:
You can find Week 1 here:
Week 2:
Week 3:
Week 4:
Week 5:
If you’re new here, please do also take a look at the Chat, where we get together at the weekend for the weekly Show Us Your Plots photo-sharing: you can post a picture of your plot, or whatever green space you’re near. It’s great fun and we get photos from all over the world - we really do. I feel as if I know some of these gardens so well.
Today’s I’m setting out the Small Garden Design task I’d like you to mull over
What we’re going to look at today is the most critical part of the design process: get this part right, and from this, everything else will flow.
Let’s go:
What goes where
I’d like you to make a list of features you would like to have in your garden. For example, dining terrace, seating area, seating spot, pond, shed. These are just some ideas.
Don’t get too specific ie birdbath, pots - these smaller items can wait to find a home. Focus instead on things you need
Now go outside
Look at your garden
Have a look at the orientation of your garden ie which way it faces. Where’s North?
Where’s the very worst spot in terms of orientation where no-one ever wants to go - usually this is the northeast-facing corner, but everyone’s different and some of us enjoy being in deep shade! Basically, where do you pretty much know you’d never sit, however much of a miracle can be worked with the design?
