A green gem in the heart of the city

A garden designed by accident?

Walking along the canals of Venice, you never quite know what you’re going to find next. Wherever you look, there’s a mesmerising scene. And sometimes, all you have to do is turn a corner.

Here in this hidden courtyard, there’s magic: someone has made this little green oasis by bringing together a collection of pots and containers  to soften the atmosphere, almost designing a green haven to be enjoyed by anyone who  stumbles upon it.

This tiny little city garden shows how relatively easy it is to create a welcoming spot out of a formerly hard area, simply by softening it with plants, with flowers and foliage. Views and doorsteps are framed, and even the windowsills have had the green treatment.

I’d  had no idea that this city jewel existed, but once I’d discovered it, I stayed here for ages, absolutely enchanted by the will of someone to transform a courtyard, and thereby encouraging neighbours to do the same.

It’s a great example of greening up a city space. Wouldn’t it be the dream for more urban places to do this? (Let’s not think about vandalism etc right now - who knows, maybe by even setting an example, a civilised approach might be encouraged?)

So simple, so effective, so uplifting, so very good for all.
