The NL is definitely a trailblazer on this, reading about their facade gardens inspired me to launch something in our community in Brussels. However, it’s difficult here with much fragmentation of govt. bodies to be able to rip up the pavements. Although, I have come across a non profit called Less béton which helps projects in the community to remove concrete jungles. But I love the idea of a competition to rip up tiles! Thanks Linda and Jo for sharing. I received good news today that our street planting project is receiving funding 😊. Next on my list is to get some concrete replaced with plants 🌱

What a great idea Jo! thanks for sharing @Linda Bruce 💚 Our pavements just recently were resurfaced and the grass verges were disturbed during the work. The tarmac company called Hamilton’s tidied up the grass verges and instead of grass seed wild flower seeds were sowed 💚 The Council must have gave them permission to do this and we got a card through the letter box asking for comments on the work carried out!

Hastings could do with a lift! Chichester would be easier though!

Hastings would be transformed. I'd love to get my hands on a bit of land there

I wouldn't hold your breath, Sibylla, if they are anything like Greenwich Council. We seem to have so much beurocracy & red tape in this country, I've never understood why we couldn't follow a similar mandate as they do in a lot of European countries, in greening up their spaces.

Glad the story was of interest, Jo. We need to be removing the concrete mantle in our urban areas, not putting more down. In Scotland it's not now permitted to have a non-porous paved or tarmac driveway/garden ground unless it is definitely porous or can drain away into a porous area of the garden. But this is not enforced, and more and more totally concrete "gardens" are being created. It causes me physical pain when I see them. How to foster the mindset and sense of community?

It was inspirational, Linda. I think it needs a great big TV programme....

I love this! Especially as it looks like it is being done properly, unlike when councils in London do it (Lambeth!) and it's done so badly by people who don't care that they become unkempt places for people to flytip.

Yes, having people who care about it is key I reckon

This tile whipping business is brilliant! We can’t even sprinkle a few seeds on a disused verge here, without the Council having a heart attack and banging on about permits and personal insurance.
