Dear Jo, I just joined and I am so pleased to see Lara's comment below. Like her, I live in a coolish, wet (if we're lucky) hot, dry summer in Southern California on the hills above the ocean. We burned to the ground six and a half years ago and we're still rebuilding our house but the garden has come back with a vengeance and is a little wild. I am about to start a complete and comprehensive re-design. While my mouth waters at the sight of all that lush, fern-frilled greenery of the glasshouse garden at the Chelsea Flower show, I am a pragmatist and know that I must do analogy rather than duplication -- at least for 8 months of the year!
I’ve been trying to catch up on your posts on Substack… I had a break during the school holidays as have teachers in my family!
I’m unable to comment on anything as I assume my kindly gifted subscription has expired , I get pop ups asking me to update my subscription which I can’t do… please can you confirm it has expired??
Hi Jo, I am a semi-retired landscape architect, originally from sunny Southern California, recently moved to the Pacific Northwest in US zone 8b. I was struck by your recent Instragram post in which you mention being very dubious about the garden’s potential in the home you purchased. I am in a similar position having moved to a neglected historic home with a garden that faces northeast, dominated by a beautiful (but still dominating!) red oak. Looking forward to reading your article and many more and to sharing my garden progress.
Hello Jo, I just signed up and it all sounds so lovely and exciting. I recently retired and want to actually, really get into gardening. I've made a start, but, ye gads, the things I do not know! I garden in the very hot and humid US South( Louisiana USDA Zone 8b), my garden has several different challenges, moving from deep shade to intense afternoon sun. So very excited to be here and thank you very much for the lovely discount. xx
Hi Jo, looking forward to diving into all the lovely-looking content on here. In Year 2 of turning the concrete yard of our inner-city Victorian terrace into a little walled garden oasis. Beds already laid out, but realising I've a way to go figuring out succession planting and what spot suits what plants!
Thank you so much for this guide. I found Substack to be quite a challenge to begin with - this has helped tremendously. I live in Victoria, Australia, and I'm hoping that our gardening climates have enough in common to belong to this group. It's cool and wet here in the winter (average 14C day and 3C nights), but much hotter in the summer (30+).
We are on 1 acre and I've slowly turned most of it into orchard and flower beds over the past 28 years. I'm currently using it for a micro cut flower farm, and hoping to incorporate some design features into the practical rows of flowers to make it both useful and lovely.
Hello - I am excited and intrigued to be part of this community as I know nothing about gardening and have only limited success keeping my indoor plants alive! We do however have a rather large blank canvas to start to fill having recently finished a very long build project and having a few acres of mud to now turn our attention to. We are in the chilterns so have a mix of clay and chalk and want to create something sympathetic to the countryside that surrounds us. We have made a start creating a wildlife pond and planting some trees and grass and wild flower seed…adding some beds would be good so I will be looking for inspiration - I have filled a planter with things I like as a bit of a test.
Welcome, Clare! Look out for the #showusyourplots thread on Sunday over on Chat- you can post photos there if you’d like. Lots of inspiration to come 🌱
Hello! Jo, you finally hooked me! It wasn’t so much the 20% off, it was more the community. I’m Karen, a passionate amateur gardener for 36 years now! I’m currently creating my fourth and possibly last garden. It’s a big down size project from a rural 2/3 acre garden in Eastern Scotland, which was part of the Scottish National Gardens scheme and also appeared in a few publications. Now I have a compacted clay new-build garden of about 11x10m square in North Dorset, in which I am creating a courtyard style garden. No grass, lots of pots and a lovely cobbled patio which is being laid as I type. It’s very exciting! Can’t wait to share it with everyone and learn lots more, as well as share my own experiences.
Hello Jo I’m a returning follower, subscriber, looking forward to inspiration, learning, chats from you and other gardeners. (Hoping to join the Zoom this evening if I can discover how to access it.)
Hi Jo, just joined your subscription curtesy of my daughter Hannah Ray as a birthday present! Looking forward to reading and following and enjoying all things gardening here. Sarah

Wonderful
Hi you say its 74p a week to join, but the monthly subscription is the only option at £19.99?
Hi thank you for this - yes, it's far better value to join for a year than it is for a month.
This is awesome, Jo.
