It becomes a habit, the morning mini-safari around the garden to see what’s blooming, what’s surprising and what’s absent. June is the perfect month for this early-hours foray, the hushed anticipation of early summer and the air beginning to stir with whispers of renewal. Buds emerge, signs of the arrival of this cherished annual event, and unfurl their petals, casting a spell upon the garden that lingers long after their blooms have withered away.

Like whispered secrets passed among nature's gentle conspirators, the news of their arrival spreads from gardener to gardener: I tell you about it, you tell a friend, the friend passes the message on. An extraordinary transformation is taking place.

In the early morning light, bathed in hues of rose and gold, the first roses reveal themselves:
