Before we jump into this week’s ideas, if you’re new to The Gardening Mind, you might like to have a tootle around some of the things we chat about.

Small Garden Design Course

You can start this at any time - head to all previous sections here.

Not enough time to water your pots and containers?

It seems like such a good idea, doesn’t it? To fill our pots and creating layers of fabulous colour - especially when a good container planting brings much-needed colour to the garden?

Great for jollying up dull corners, and fabulous for small spaces, plants in pots and containers can totally transform your garden.

The grim reality, though, is that pots need watering. Unless you’re planting succulents, every vessel will need at least a tiny bit of water - out in the garden, the plants’ feet are going to be in some sort of medium (eg soil or gravel), and they will have access to some sort of moisture. This is helpful.

How to design a border?

If you’re wondering where on earth to start with a border planting design, you can find how-to and ideas in these articles, where I break the whole process down for you into bite size chunks. Here are some of them: how to design a border in your garden, how to design a flowerbed, and how on earth to start with border planting design.

Sunday’s Show Us Your Plots

Do look out for the Chat that takes place here every Sunday morning. It’s a chance for us all to share photos of our gardens or a green space near us. As I haven’t been home for a month, I’ve no idea what’s in store for me when I return later today. Yikes.

Making the magic

Have you ever stepped into a magical garden? A garden that takes you away from the world, from work, from STUFF? You walk in, and there’s something about it that behaves like a spa for the mind?

Imagine stepping into your own garden and feeling that ‘ahhhh’ feeling. Your shoulders drop, the stress vanishes just like that, and you simply want to stay there. For whatever reason, it feels like a haven, a place away from everything.

You can make this space by bearing just a few key elements in mind. Everything we’ve looked at so far in the Small Garden Design Course can be made even better by incorporating the layers that are the subject of today’s post, so if you’re following that, now’s the time to add these ingredients. A little bit of seasoning will definitely transform the dish.
