Jewel colours in the autumn garden, and a garden design trick
Plus: a wildlife challenge and some gardening ideas for this week
Do dip in and out of this week’s feature as you feel - think of The Gardening Mind as a kind of magazine to flick through and come back to deep-dive into certain topics when you feel like it! There’s a lot to browse through: garden design tips, planting ideas, wildlife….
Here in the garden, Autumn colours are starting to fill the flowerbeds, and whilst I might not be too ecstatic at the gradual approach of shorter days, I really do welcome all these jewel tones that the lower light and hazier mornings bring with them. At the beginning of the month, we discussed easy ideas to make colourful August gardens; in today’s issue, I’m going to be looking at more colour in the form of the not-so humble gladiolus, a much-maligned plant that I believe we should take another look at, and I’ll be suggesting ways that you can make it work in your own garden, bringing those precious gem Autumn shades elegantly - yes elegantly - into your garden. On the design front, we’re going to look at a trick to improve a view that doesn’t feel quite right, turning it into a view which entices you to explore the garden further:
The contrast introduces mystery, and makes us inquisitive. It is all very satisfying.
I’ll soon be sending out the Zoom invitation to the Border Design and Small Garden Design Zoom get-together for paid subscribers. It costs just over £1 a week to become a paid subscriber - that’s like buying one coffee. A daily coffee equals a month’s worth of The Gardening Mind. And the really important thing is that if you subscribe now, your subscription will always stay the same - it’ll NEVER increase again, even when the price goes up.
